Venues
In 2026, ICYMARE returns to its roots in the northern German city of Bremen. From September 7 to 11, the conference will be hosted by the Department of Marine Botany at the University of Bremen. Following the grand kick-off in 2024, the Übersee Museum will once more set the stage for our Icebreaker event. And since you shouldn’t change a winning team, we’re also looking forward to another stellar post-conference party at the Schwimmverein Bremen von 1910 e.V club house along the shore of the river Weser.
City of Bremen
Bremen is the perfect backdrop for ICYMARE 2026 BREMEN with its blend of maritime history and the energy of a modern university town. The historic city center is home to the famous Bremen Town Musicians, quaint cobblestone streets, a lively nightlife district, and of course the region’s signature dish: Grünkohl & Pinkel. If you visit the statue of the Bremen Town Musicians, don’t forget to touch the donkey’s legs with both hands. Local legend has it that it brings good luck, but using only one hand will definitely mark you as a tourist.
With people from all over the world studying and working here, the University of Bremen is one of Germany’s leading universities in marine research. The Marine Botany group in particular is recognized for its work on cold-water marine ecosystems and related environmental challenges. In fact, the University of Bremen is one of only two in Germany participating in the International Universities Climate Alliance.
Conference Venue
The main conference venue is the BIOM building at the University of Bremen, the central hub for the Biology department. Opened in 2023, the fully accessible BIOM building provides the perfect setting for ICYMARE with large classrooms, several smaller seminar rooms and comfortable social areas.
The venue is well connected to the city by public transport. Tram line 6 stops directly at Universität-Zentralbereich, just a short walk from the BIOM building. For details on parking, public transport, and optimal routes to the conference venues, please refer to Arrival and Transport.

Icebreaker Venue
We will start ICYMARE 2026 BREMEN with our traditional Icebreaker at the Übersee-Museum. The Übersee-Museum combines a collection of ethnology, trade and natural history that is unique in Europe into a unified experience under the motto: The World under one Roof. Join us for the conference opening night and explore distant regions of the world through cultural exhibits, natural history displays, and realistic flora and fauna dioramas.
Being located right in the Bremen’s city center next to the central station, the Übersee-Museum is easy to reach on foot or via public transport.

Post-Conference Party Venue
Walking along the banks of the Weser is one of the best ways to experience Bremen and for this year’s post-conference party, you’ll get to celebrate right in the middle of this lovely area. We’re wrapping up ICYMARE 2026 BREMEN at the club home of Schwimmverein Bremen von 1910 e.V. right by the river. Which we think is a very fitting way to end the week.
The venue is easy to reach from the city center by public transport and if you’re arriving by car, you’ll even find some free parking spots nearby.
